Spot-On News: Issue No. 7
Upcoming Event: Sometimes a book, event, or play perfectly captures the tone of the moment. Such an event is an appearance by Peggy Orenstein who will speak at New Trier High School next week, sponsored by Family Action Network. Orenstein arrives in Chicago to discuss her new book, “Boys & Sex: Young Men on Hookups, Love, Porn, Consent and Navigating the New Masculinity.” The Harvey Weinstein trial, the film Bombshell - all rolling out of the #MeToo movement, as well as the Brett Kavanaugh hearings, combine to make Ms. Orenstein’s talk especially timely. NPR’s Terri Gross summarized the book when she wrote, “Her new book…is based on extensive interviews with more than 100 college and college-bound boys and young men of diverse backgrounds between the ages of 16 and 22.” Orenstein sets forth a new paradigm for teaching boys (and men) about their sexuality in light of the reassessment (or correction) of relations between the sexes. Orenstein notes that today’s male youth is sadly unprepared to understand what is expected of him and is not instructed by parents on how to respectfully engage in sexual activity. Orenstein also wrote Girls & Sex: Navigating the Complicated New Landscape, published in 2016, that discusses the sexuality of young women. Orenstein recently appeared on Fresh Air and wrote an opinion piece for the New York Times. Orenstein will be speaking to the public on two dates at New Trier High School in Northfield. On January 13, Orenstein will speak at 7:00 pm, and on January 14, Orenstein will speak to clinicians as well as the general public at 9:00 am. Both events are free.
